A Statement Victory for Junior Boys Soccer

Updated: Aug 4, 2022

Penryn College locked horns with Valencia High School at 14h50. In a match that strongly favoured the visiting side. Penryn would prove to be the underdogs of the story and defend their turf. Penryn had previously had a preseason tour at Camp Discovery and things did not go as planned. The Eagles failed to register a single win in their 10-game tournament.

The game started with Valencia dominating the home side but that would change as Penryn would launch their first counter attack that awarded them with a penalty (taken by the Skipper, Uviwe Nyathi) that was brilliantly saved by the Valencia goalkeeper.

Although the penalty wasn’t successfully converted, the spirit was lifted within the team and momentum shifted to the home side. Penryn kept their high pressing play until Siphesihle Nkundlane scored a fantastic top corner goal from 27 yards! A truly spectacular moment that had the crowd blaring and reminded some of the similar goals that were scored by, Premier League Hall of Famer, Wayne Rooney during his prime. Siphesihle’s confidence would rise and would lead to him scoring his second goal after beating the Valencia goalkeeper in a thrilling 1v1. Valencia’s confidence diminished, spreading low sprits around the team. With a demotivated side, Penryn would hunt for the third goal that was scored once again by Siphesihle Nkundlane.

Penryn would launch one last attack that lead to another penalty that would get easily saved. The game would end shortly with Penryn starting the

season with an emphatic 3-0 victory over Valencia High School. The Penryn College Junior Team Skipper, Uviwe Nyathi, went on to say, “the game against Valencia

on Wednesday went way better than I had expected.

The preseason tournament at Camp Discovery really lowered our sprits but after this win I saw how much we had learnt from that and I know that the gents are hungry for more. It’s really nice to see a number of people attending practices and actually fighting for a spot in the team. It really brings some healthy competition amongst the squad and seeing them push one another to become better and ultimately creating strong bonds with each other makes me happy.

Everyone played well and did what they came to do. I’m very proud of my

team. I would like to extend my appreciation to our coaches for the effort and time they put to improve the team. It really motivates us to want to do better and be at practice. I am excited for the rest of the season and I hope we can keep this momentum. We have to reach the semi-finals of the league cup and redeem ourselves from our disappointing exit last season.”
