On Friday, the 13th of May our very own Penryn College journeyed to Johannesburg to partake in the Heronbridge College Winter Sports and Activities Derby Weekend, comprising chess and netball on Friday and rugby on Saturday.
Our very own Bonginkosi Thwala (number three) and Tenhlanhla Gama (number nine) ranked chess players opposed Heronbridge College in two exciting games of chess. Penryn College traveled with more players than the Heronbridge team. Because of its shortage of players, the number three ranked Heronbridge player was forced to play two different matches against Bonginkosi Thwala and one unfair fixture against Tenhlanhla Gama (ranked six positions below three). Regardless of the one-sided conditions, Penryn College still lost, maintaining a really slim margin.
Likewise, our netball team lost 19-14 to Heronbridge due to our unfortunate player dispositions. Anna Phillips (the starting GK) could only play the second half of the match due to an injury sustained during practice the previous day. Felicia Ntandane, also suffering from an ankle injury had to play a full game of an unoriginal position due to the starting GD having to be at debate at the same time the game was being played, resulting in a lot of unpractised, rearranged player positioning. Regardless of Heronbridge being recognised for its higher standard netball, Penryn College still gave the school a run for their money with the resistance of an easy win for Heronbridge. Very well done to the u/16 netball team.
Closing off the weekend was a truly eventful and disappointing game of rugby from the u/16 boys. The final score of the game was incongruous with the match’s victor, with Penryn trailing by twelve points and still winning, due to Heronbridge forfeiting the game. Heronbridge College forfeited after the last of many unsavory physical altercations on the rugby field due to the lack of sportsmanship and manners from both teams and especially our very own Penryn College. One of which, Sandile was given a red card due to an alleged right hook punch to a player of the opposition. Nonetheless, Muzi Chirwa and Kgao Moganedi had some stellar performances in that game, with Chirwa adding another try to his tally for the season scoring the only try from the Penryn side in the match. The final score read 17-5 to Heronbridge with Penryn College winning by forfeit nonetheless.
In celebration of the victories, and in grief of the losses, Penryn College safely travelled back to Mbombela on Saturday having given their all in every fixture, with everybody's head held high entering and exiting every activity’s venue. We are proud of every student that participated and expressive of great gratitude to all of the coaches who sacrificed their time to breed and better the various students in the various teams. Well done Penryn College
